The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority has banned the use and carriage of the Samsung Note S7 phones on flights within the country.
The authority also said the device should not be carried even in luggages of passengers or crew who board the flights. Passengers have also been cautioned not to use the device while on board the aircraft.
This warning from the Civil Aviation Authority comes on the back of reports that the Samsung S7 phones have been exploding especially during charging.
A press statement from the Authority said in part that “pursuant to the powers conferred on the Director-General by section 9 of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority Act 2014, Act 678, (as amended by section 3 of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority Act (Amendment) Act 2015, Act 9060 this directive is hereby made to take immediate effect from the date of this publication.”
Reports of the mobile device exploding, melting and sometimes causing bodily harm have been reported globally. It is on the back of this that the authority is calling for a ban on the use, carriage and keeping of the device on flights.
The United States of America Federal Authority gave similar warnings earlier this month instructing that the device should not be used on flights.
Samsung after receiving reports that the S7 device was exploding and easily catching fire, recalled the devices from about ten markets. A total of about 2.5 million units of the phone is expected back to the manufacturer.
A battery defect was detected for causing the explosions and overheating of the devices.
