More than 316 registered candidates for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) from 15 schools in the Kwahu East District are not likely to write the examination because of harassment by Fulani herdsmen and their cattle.
As a result of the harassment, the pupils of the affected schools and their teachers were afraid of being attacked by the herdsmen and had, therefore, stopped going to school.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Kwesi Boafo, the Kwahu East District Director of Education, appealed to the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Mr Bryan Acheampong, to intervene to help deal with the rampant Fulani attack on the people in the district.
He said over 15 schools at Atta-Ne-tta, Dweabrase, Oboyan 1 and 2, Afuni, Asseseso and other surrounding villages had been closed down due to the harassment the pupils were subjected to when attending school.
Mr Boafo said until the situation was normalised, the future of the 316 candidates could not be guaranteed.
He said the Ghana Education Service had been meeting with the District Assembly Security sub-committee on how best to resolve the problem to enable the pupils to attend school.
