The youngest MP in parliament has continued to show that she is not out to play games with her work. Francisca Oteng-Mensah, is the youngest Member of Parliament in the 7th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. Despite her young age, this MP who is obviously under the spell of her exciting days on the job, has indeed decided to put the energy and enthusiasm to good use.

Highlighting her plans, the Kwabre East MP says her main priorities for her constituency would center on environment, gender issues, and education. Miss Francisca revealed this and many more during her interaction with the media.

Being a very young MP, Miss Mensah emphasized on the need to show readiness and eagerness towards learning the ways of the parliament, as well as how things are done; so as not to err on the side of ignorance. She spoke about the need to step up her game in order to make a significant difference as a legislator; because according to her, her constituents would not accept the fact that she’s new to parliament as an excuse.

Miss Francisca Oteng-Mensah of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) was massively endorsed by Kwabre East constituents in the Ashanti Region during the December 7, 2016 parliamentary elections. Miss Mensah had won by a landslide with a total of 71,757 votes, representing 83.03 percent – the highest in the history of presidential and parliamentary results, while her closest competitor followed with 15,000 votes.

The law student defeated the incumbent MP Kofi Frempong who had been in parliament since 2004 during the party primaries. Miss Mensah made history by becoming the youngest member of parliament following the country’s recent elections.

Barely a month after her victory, the young MP had revealed to the media cum Ghana at large, the untold challenges that come with the position Member of Parliament. Miss Mensah in an interview earlier this year complained about the financial pressure mounted on MP’s by their constituents.

The young MP had said that despite her age and inexperience, her constituents make excessive demands ranging from school fees, jobs, food and so on. In spite of regular delays in payment of salaries of MPs according to her, Parliamentarians are constantly bombarded with excessive demands from constituents who obviously have no idea how challenging the life of an MP is.

But despite the said challenges, the Kwabre East MP has said she is ready to take up the tough task. Miss Francisca Oteng-Mensah hopes to prove during her tenure as MP, that age is not a barrier in politics. She pointed out that as an MP, your constituents will not take the excuse that you’re not privy to needed information about the job hence, her decision to toughen up.

Francisca, is the daughter of Dr. Oteng Gyasi; owner of international textile company, the Angel Group. Miss Mensah is a law student, at the Kwame Nkrumah University.
