Former President Kufour Blasts Mahama over Volta Region Record

Former president John Agyekum Kufour has strongly defended his record of performance in the Volta Region, stressing that he developed infrastructure in the region.
According to Mr Kufuor, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constructed the Ho Polytechnic and roads from Nkonya through to Dambai.
“Ho Polytechnic was built by us. Even the University of Ghana envies this school. Go to Nkonya through to Dambai. We constructed all those roads in the first term of the NPP,” he said.
Mr Kufour was speaking at his residence in Accra on Wednesday when the newly-elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa North, Samuel Kwadwo Amoako, called on him, according to a report by citifmonline.com.
His comments come after President John Mahama, during a visit to the Volta Region last week, accused the NPP of neglecting the region when it held power between 2001 and 2009.
The president had urged the people of the Volta Region to ignore the NPP’s claim that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had taken them for granted.
“Every progress that has been made in this region in terms of electrification, water among others have been made under an NDC government. From Jerry Rawlings’ time to Prof Mills’ time to my time,” he said, challenging them to show him what the NPP did in the eight years that they were in power.
President’s Mahama’s comments did not sit well with Mr Kufour, who accused the NDC of squandering money meant for the development of the Volta Region.
“They claim we did nothing in the Volta Region. Let’s start from Keta. The money they acquired for the sea defense wall, they squandered it. It was during my tenure that we constructed the wall,” he said.
Mr Kufour went on condemn the government’s handling of the economy, describing its decision to seek IMF bailout as disappointing.
“In three years, we (NPP) were able to take Ghana from the IMF. Now we are back here again,” he said.
