Uriah Asante, Former Hearts of Oak and Etoile du Sahel midfielder died on Monday at the age of 24 from cardiac arrest at the Korle Bu Teaching hospital in Accra, weeks after arriving in the country on holidays.
Asante joined Hearts from second-tier side Pure Joy FC, before a move to Tunisian giants Etoile du Sahel in 2013 and EGS Gafsa a season later. He then signed a two-year deal with Bahraini side Al Riffa in 2015 as a free agent after parting ways with Gafsa.
Asante’s cousin Adolf Gyimah confirmed the news, adding that burial arrangements would be announced later. “It’s true our brother has been pronounced dead after we rushed him to the hospital this morning,” Gyimah told Ashh FM.
“He complained of chest and throat pains so we quickly sent him for treatment but after a while, we were told he couldn’t survive what the doctors termed as cardiac arrest. In fact, we’re devastated and don’t know what to do now because he was a breadwinner through the football he plays.
“We will convey a family meeting and decide date and time for his funeral rites. May his soul rest in peace,” he added.
Ghana goalkeeper Fatau Dauda and Berekum Chelsea striker Saddick Adams shared their shock on social media after the news of Asante’s demise went viral.
“Another soul is gone, Allah have mercy on us. RIP, Uriah Asante” Dauda wrote on Twitter.
“I don’t want to believe it, but if this is really true, may the Almighty Allah grant you a peaceful place to rest. I remember we spoke before you moved to Tunisia (Etoile du Sahel), when you were asking me how Tunis and the club is? RIP Uriah Asante,” Adams wrote on Facebook.
