Five persons suspected to be supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been arrested by the police for forcibly taking over a revenue collection point on the Savelugu-Kpalung road in the Northern Region.
Those arrested are said to be among a group of young men believed to be supporters of the ruling NPP who attacked the revenue collection point yesterday with the intention of taking over collection of the tolls.
The arrest of the five persons is coming on the heels of the condemnation of such behaviours by NPP youth by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his maiden State of the Nation Address in Parliament yesterday.
Police
A police source that confirmed the arrest to the Daily Graphic gave the name of the ring leader of the group (who is in police custody) as Abdulai Alhassan Gariba, 32.
The police could not give the names of the other four suspects.
According to the police, Gariba, at the time of his arrest, was driving a taxi with registration number GE 8121-13.
The source told the Daily Graphic that a search conducted revealed an AK-47 assault rifle hidden in the engine compartment of the car while two magazines loaded with 32 rounds of ammunitions were also found concealed under the driver’s seat; a machete was found in the boot of the car.
According to the source, Gariba could not tell the source of the weapons during interrogation.
