Ex Prez Shuts Everyone Up With Response To Return Calls

With the former president’s response to the ‘Mahama 2020 comeback calls’, it is obvious that both crediting and discrediting folks will have to keep quite on the issue, at least for a while.

The immediate past president of Ghana, former president John Dramani Mahama has finally spoken on the recent clamouring calls on him to or not to return for re-election in the year 2020.

Speaking at the funeral of a cousin, Mr Abutu Johnny Walker at his hometown of Bole on Sunday, 26th March 2017, the ex president said that it is too early for the National Democratic (NDC) to occupy themselves with the issue of who bears the party’s flag the 2020 presidential elections.

Mahama, who had earlier pointed out that the cause of NDC’s 2016 defeat is multifaceted, called on party members to rather put heads together and work hard towards restoring the party’s reputation against victory in the 2020 elections.

He said that the right time is yet to come when the party will decide who leads them in the next election coming up in three years time. Pointing out that whatever is not ordained by God will never come to pass, he advised them to put efforts together to strengthen the party’s following at the grassroots; adding that “sometimes God delays good things to come on ones way”.

Similar to Mahama’s opinion, MP for Wa West, Joseph Yileh Chireh, had earlier described calls for the immediate past President to run in the 2020 elections as “premature and undemocratic.” Calling on party members to suspend such calls, he also warned them to abstain from publicly declaring their preferences regarding who leads the party as such actions will eventually destroy the party’s unity.

After John Mahama was defeated in the 2016 election by Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party, the National Democratic Congress flagbearer became the first sitting president to be voted out of power after one tenure in the fourth republic of Ghana.

Following the inauguration of the new Akufo-Addo government in January, several controversies have continued to arise in the now opposition NDC household. The debates range from what led to the party’s unprecedented defeat in last year’s election, to who will lead the party in the next election come year 2020.

Meanwhile, the defeated NDC has set up a committee led by Kwesi Botchwey to investigate the actual causes of the party’s loss in the December 2016 elections. But it appears majority of the members are not patient enough to hear the proceeds of the ongoing investigations before making their conclusions.

The controversies are apparently tearing the family asunder as members are having divergent opinions. While some of them laid the blames on the immediate past president for varying reasons, others shifted the fault to some other different factors.

Consequently, those who are taking sides with the erstwhile president are solidly behind the Mahama 2020 vision, while those of contrary opinions are strictly not in support of his return. But with the former president’s response to the NDC palaver, it is obvious that the folks will keep quite on the issue, at least for now.
