Exactly four years ago today, Ghana lost its longest serving vice president in the Fourth Republic, Alhaji Aliu Mahama.
Known particularly for his advocacy on discipline, Alhaji Aliu Mahama became Ghana’s first Muslim vice president as well in 2001.
He died on November 16, 2012 after days of being hospitalized at the Intensive Care Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
A civil engineer by profession, Alhaji Mahama became Vice President after the New Patriotic Party led by John Agyekum Kufuor won the 2000 elections.
The two left power in 2009 after eight years of reign.
Coincidentally, his position was occupied by current president John Dramani Mahama, who became Vice President after winning the 2008 elections as John Evans Atta Mills’ running mate.
The late Aliu Mahama was born in Yendi on March 3, 1946.
