The dire economic situation in the country is now becoming bigger than the New Patriotic Party anticipated while in opposition, President Nana Akufo-Addo admits.
The party had capitalized on what it termed economic mismanagement by the erstwhile Mahama government to win power in the 2016 general elections.
Less than a month into office, the president appears to have been confronted by a more serious challenge to surmount.
He told the media in a widely broadcast event to outdoor his 10 regional ministers that emerging evidence points to a rather stark situation.
“We inherited an economy in poor shape; I suspect from what I am hearing, the evidence that is coming to me that, it is even in poorer shape than we even anticipated.”
Nana Akufo-Addo intimated that he would not be deterred by the prevailing condition as he relied on a popular catchphrase that “when times are tough, the tough gets going”.
Whilst appealing for support for his ministers to address the enormous challenges facing the country, the President acknowledged, “this is the time we have to show leadership and commitment to our nation”.
He described himself as an “unrepentant optimist” assuring all and sundry that things will be improved under his governance.
