Some staff members of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Central Region have called on Ghanaians to mass up in a demonstration against the intended concession of the company.

The staff members- calling themselves the “Concerned Citizens and Central Regional Employees of ECG” -intimated that they have the nation at heart, hence the need to halt the intended deal by the government.

In a press statement signed by the group’s spokesperson, Mr. Seth Birikorang, and Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Quansah, and issued to Today  in Cape Coast in the Central Region on Tuesday, April 18, 2017,  they warned that the concession, which will last for 25 years, will definitely defeat the good intention and purpose of government’s “one district one factory” policy.

According to the statement, the concession will not demonstrate any form of corporate social responsibility.

“In consideration of article 7.1 of the compact, MIDA will not submit to the laws of Ghana since the compact overrides all laws of Ghana implying that the PURC being a Ghanaian agency cannot influence tariff determination,” it pointed out.

“Experts have predicted that the Ghanaian economy will be worse off by implementing the concession deal since a foreign entity policy will override Ghanaian laws,” the statement added.

“This will make the ruling party unpopular and risk becoming a one-term government,” the group warned.

The group opined that the non-involvement of labour, PUWU and national stakeholders constitute a stab in the back of the country.

They therefore, called on government to urgently expedite the proposed dialogue with key stakeholders as promised by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to imbibe useful suggestions that will be beneficial to the nation.

The statement further threatened to embark on series of demonstrations across the country until government cancels the deal.
