Disregard NPP’s ‘irresponsible, Reckless, Treasonable’ Declaration – NDC

The governing National Democratic Congress has condemned the opposition New Patriotic Party for acting in a “treasonable” manner by calling the results of the 2016 presidential election.

The NPP had claimed victory in a press conference held earlier today and demanded that President Mahama who is seeking re-election concedes defeat. The party said its presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo obtained 4676,998 votes from the about 23,000 polling stations with President Mahama trailing with 3644724 votes.

But the NDC has held a counter press conference to discredit the NPP’s figures.

“This act is not only irresponsible and reckless, but treasonable act perpetuated to undermine the peace of this nation,” NDC’s director of elections, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo told the media on Thursday.

He reiterated that the posture of the NPP can undermine the security of the country.

According to Ofosu Ampofo, the NDC has “clear results” of what its presidential candidate John Mahama  is doing and “we believe he is doing very well”.

He also confirmed earlier statement by the NDC campaign team claiming that President Mahama is in a “comfortable lead” but would wait for the Electoral Commission to declare verified results.

He therefore called all law abiding citizens to condemn the action by the NPP.

He encouraged supporters of the NDC to remain call, and all Ghanaians to disregard the NPP’s press conference

Chairman of the Council, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante had early on in an interview with TV3 condemned the NPP. “It is premature for any party to call the elections, though they have right to talk about provisional results, it is only the electoral commission that has the constitutional mandate to come out to declare the elections,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission’s Director of Elections said the commission has “not received any results” yet, and asked all political parties to refrain from declaring the results.
