Celebrations greeting the victory of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the December 7 polls have been characterised by violence in some parts of the country.

This has led to a section of the populace calling on the president-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo, to call his supporters to order after the outgoing National Democratic Congress (NDC) threatened to respond in equal measure if the attacks persist.

But speaking to Class News, Mr Atta Akyea said the police must arrest perpetrators, even if they are NPP supporters, to ensure the country’s peace is preserved.

“The police have the mandate to ensure law and order and the president-elect has not been sworn in yet. All the powers of the state are vested in President Mahama until January 7, and so what I was expecting was that if these are individuals from the NPP, they should be dealt with, because you cannot promote lawlessness in a constitutional dispensation. The mere fact that you think your party has won you will want to do all manner of illegality you should be dealt with, that’s my view,” he stated.

“But if this is a way of embarrassing the NPP and it’s not true that these people are NPP supporters, then the police must investigate and deal with the matter. So, whoever is trying to cause mayhem should be dealt with, that’s my view, whether you are NPP, NDC or whoever and you want to take the law into your own hand you should be dealt with ruthlessly,” the lawmaker added.
