Court Grants NUGS President GHC10,000 Bail

An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to the President of the National Union Ghana Students (NUGS), Lukman Abubakar, in the sum of 10,000 cedis with two sureties.

The student leader was arrested Tuesday with 4 counts for unlawful entry to TV3 premises at Kanda.

Lukeman had gone to the TV station for an interview but another student, Julian Mawusi Komla who purports to be the rightful NUGS president, stormed the station asking the officials to disregard the former, a development that resulted in chaos on the station’s premises.

The police was called in and Lukeman was arrested.

Kasapa FM’s Court Correspondent, Daakyehene Ofosu Agyeman reported that when the accused appeared in court Friday, the presiding Judge, her honor Ruby Aryeetey charged him for unlawful entry and granted him bail.

The case has been adjourned to October 25, where the court will go into the matter.

The opposition NPP recently condemned Lukman Abubakar’s arrest, claiming the government had a hand in his arrest because he has been very critical of the Mahama-led administration relative to issues bothering on students and education. .

The National Union of Ghana Students, the umbrella body of students in Ghana has for the past years been heavily divided along political lines.

It is well known that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have always been very interested in who emerges the President of NUGS and in some instances have tendered to influence the outcome of the elections for reasons best known to them.

Both parties in the past are said to have sponsored the campaigns of candidates who contested for the position of NUGS president.
