A Chinese team comprised of senior high students won a silver medal at the 2016 International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) held in Boston, the United States from Oct. 27 to 31.

The contest attracted 46 high school teams, 234 university teams and four community laboratories from across the world. Receiving a silver medal was a major achievement for the Chinese team, CIEI-BJ.

The iGEM Competition is the premiere student competition in synthetic biology. Since 2004, participants of the competition experience education, teamwork, knowledge-sharing and more in a unique competition setting, as stated on its website.

Team CIEI-BJ was organized by China-based International Teenager Competition and Communication Center (ITCCC) in July this year. Student contestants attended a summer camp in Beijing where they received tuition on genetic engineering and biology by professors from Tsinghua University, China Agricultural University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. After training, CIEI-BJ finalized their subjects and the supporting research plans.

This process ignited the young contestants’ interests in biology. Du Chenghao, from Beijing Huijia Private School said, “I turned from a person who doesn’t show any interest in biology to one who wishes to take it as my college major. It is a huge change for me.”
