Former National Organiser for the main opposition National Democratic Congress has said it is too early for a section of the party to start calling on former president John Mahama to contest the 2020 elections as the party’s candidate.

According to Yaw Boateng Gyan, the NDC as a political must be focusing on identifying factors that led to the party’s electoral defeat instead of engaging in acts that are likely to further destroy fortunes of the NDC.

Boateng Gyan was speaking to host of Abusua Nkommo, Kwame Adinkrah in response to calls on John Mahama to contest the next elections on the ticket of the NDC.

There have been calls on the party to sponsor Mahama as its next candidate for the 2020 elections by leading members of the NDC including former ministers.

Former Minister for Sports, Nii Lantey Vanderpuije has said the former president will contest the next elections against all odds.

Former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Joseph Yammin also reaffirmed speculations that former president John Dramani Mahama could stage a come back for the presidency in the 2020 general elections.

According to Yamin, the party’s delegates are itching to give John Mahama a resounding endorsement to lead the party again in the next elections.

The former NDC National Organiser said, “Kwame, I think it’s too early for us to start urging Mahama to contest the next elections when we have not finished identifying issues that made us lose the elections.”

“Why are people calling on Mahama to contest when there is a committee in place to gather information on why we lost the elections…I think this will further divide our party than we can imagine,” he observed.

“We should not be making preferences…I am sure there are others who would want to the for the NDC in 2020…So we as a party must be working improving our political fortunes while we leave the contest open for anyone that wants to contest,” he added.
