Prosecutors have declined to disclose the content of the development but have asked for an adjournment to study the issues that have arisen.

A Deputy Superintendent of Police, A. A. Annor, informed the court of the new development but failed to give details.

The District Court, presided over by Mr Stephen Owusu, granted Mr Annor’s prayer and adjourned the case to October 3, 2016.

Bullion robbery

Two police officers and a civilian robbed a bullion van belonging to the GCB Bank Limited in the Afram Plains in the Eastern Region on August 16, 2016.

The alleged attack by the officers, General Corporal Solomon Elvis Mensah and General Lance Corporal Daniel Kissi Abrokwa, led to the death of Daniel K. Sarpong, the driver of the bullion van.

The two officers are being held on the charge of attempted robbery, conspiracy and murder.

A third accused person, Hafisu Mohammed, a driver, has also been charged with conspiracy.

Ailment

At the court’s sitting in Accra yesterday, the two police officers, who did not have legal representation, told the court they were indisposed. The presiding judge, therefore, directed the prosecution to grant them medical access.

Facts of the case

According to the prosecution, Sarpong (deceased) was the driver of the bullion van with registration number GN 1354-15, while the police officers were stationed at Donkorkrom.

He said the policemen allegedly plotted to rob the GCB bullion van, which usually went to Donkorkrom to supply money to the bank.

On August 16, 2016, the two policemen who were on duty at the GN Bank and the GCB, decided to rob the van of the amount it was carrying.

The officers, therefore, discussed the robbery with Mohammed, who happens to be their friend a taxi driver.

The officers then armed themselves with A. K. 47 assault rifles and laid ambush at a spot between Tease and Mame Krobo Junction at about 10:30 am.

Mohammed drove his registered taxi towards Ekye Amanfrom to monitor the arrival of the bullion van.

The robbery

The bullion van arrived 20 minutes later and Mohammed signalled the police officers who then opened fire, killing the driver of the van.

The prosecution said a policeman accompanying the bullion van returned fire but sustained injuries in the process.

His action compelled the two policemen to take cover in the bush.

Mohammed allegedly picked the two policemen in his car in a bid to escape.

However, the Police Command at Donkorkrom got wind of the robbery incident and mobilised men who arrested the three accused persons on board the taxicab.

According to the prosecution, two AK-47 assault rifles, 23 rounds of ammunition, a machete and two metal bars were retrieved from the taxi.
