British Vogue has appointed its first male editor who happens to be gay. Edward Enninful will take over from Alexandra Schulman, who announced earlier this year that she would step down from the role after 25 years.
The incoming editor has worked for various fashion publications since entering the fashion industry as a teenager.
He worked as fashion director for i-D magazine at age 19 after being scouted as a model when he was just 16.
After more than two decades, Enninful move to W magazine as the creative and fashion director.
Described as an “influential figure” by Conde Nast’s Chairman and Chief Executive Jonathan Newhouse, Enninful is friends with Michelle Obama and Madonna.
Newhouse added: “By virtue of his talent and experience, Edward is supremely prepared to assume the responsibility of British Vogue.” The Ghanaian-born model turned stylist will take over from Schulman in August.
He will be the magazine’s 11th editor, but has contributed to American Vogue between 1998 and 2011. He contributed to Italian Vogue in 2014.Enninful was given an OBE in 2016.
Vogue model Hanne Gaby Odiele earlier this year become one of the most high-profile celebrities to come out as intersex.
