It appears to be a season of injuries for the Black Stars as some players have recently caught injury plagues at the ongoing 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. Black Stars Captain, Asamoah Gyan sustained a serious injury during Ghana’s 1-0 loss to Egypt in the final group D match at Port Gentil.

Five minutes before half time, the Al-Ahli skipper hurt his thigh as he jumped to head a cross towards him. He was replaced in the 40th minute by Jordan Ayew who struggled to make an impact as the clock ticked faster.

It had been a bad day for the Black Stars as they finished as runners-up to Egypt, following the 1-0 loss to the Pharaohs on Wednesday. The Pharoahs won the game with Mohammed Salah’s free-kick goal, early in the first half. Egypt having topped the group, will now face Group C runners-up Morocco, while Ghana takes on DR Congo in the quarter-finals of the tournament come Sunday, January 29.

According to reports, Asamoah Gyan will undergo tests today including an MRI scan, to determine the extent of the injury. The MRI scan will determine if Gyan’s injury would allow him play for the Black Stars in Sunday’s clash with DR Congo in the quarter-finals. The attacker who interacted with some sources after his injury, said he felt a stretch in his abductor muscle but hopes to find out the extent of the injury from the scan.

It has not been ascertained whether the skipper would finish the rest of Ghana’s AFCON games, as results from the supposed tests are not yet out. Gyan’s injury makes it a second major one, sustained by a Black Star’s player at the ongoing AFCON. If Gyan is declared unfit to continue, he will be Ghana’s second casualty after Baba Rahman, who got injured in the first group match against Uganda.

Gyan was making his 99th international appearance and was looking to score his record breaking 50th goal for his country and the Black Stars. Ghana vs Egypt clash was a good opportunity for the Al Ahli skipper to increase his goal tally and also add to the number of his caps.

Gyan who is currently on a one-year deal with UAE side Al Ahli, is Africa’s greatest scorer at the World Cup, with six goals. He is Ghana’s all-time top-scorer in the Africa Cup of Nations -having scored eight goals so far. The 31-year-old is also the first player after Samuel Eto’o, to score in six consecutive Africa Cup of Nations.
