President Akufo Addo says the bill on the setting up of a Special Prosecutor would be presented to parliament when the house resumes from recess.
This according to the president would ensure that due process is followed in the setting up of the office of the Special Prosecutor who would solely be handling issues of corruption and judgment debt cases.
During the 2016 election campaigns, Nana Addo, then New Patriotic Party flagbearer promised to set up the office as part of efforts to deal decisively with issues of corruption which several governments have been accused of.
In the party’s manifesto too it stated that the Special Prosecutor would “be independent of the Executive, to investigate and prosecute certain categories of cases and allegations of corruption and other criminal wrongdoing, including those involving alleged violations of the Public Procurement Act and cases implicating political officeholders and politicians.”
Speaking at the coronation of the chief of Kwahu Obomeng, Nana Effah Opaninmam III in the Eastern region, the president said “very soon the bill would be sent to parliament. The office would be in charge of issues of corruption and of people who dip their hands in the national coffers to enrich themselves.”
Some Civil Society groups and independent minds have praised the current administrations decision to set up such an office but concerns have also been raised about the neutrality of whoever would be appointed.
