Apply Laws With Common Sense and Morality – Dr Baah

Political Science Lecturer with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Dr Richard Amoako Baah has advised the outgoing government to apply the country’s laws with common sense and morality.

He opines that the practice of political equalisation is not doing the country any good and therefore urged leaders to be guided by their conscience with common sense as their guide when applying some of the powers prior to exiting power.

Dr Baah who is not enthused with the current spate of appointments and signing of new deals by the outgoing government, admits it may be within the purview of the law for such decisions to be taken but said they are morally unjustifiable and therefore want President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider such decisions.

In response to claims by a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team Abraham Amaliba that the president has not erred in appointing commissioners for CHRAJ and NCCE less than a fortnight to handing over power, he said the president ought to have done that discreetly.

“It is not all the time you will be talking about the law. Sometimes you need to apply common sense and morality. What is wrong is wrong, if President Kufuor did what was not right, it does not mean the current government should do same”, he stated.

Speaking to Lantam Papanko on the Ultimate Breakfast show, he called for a constitutional amendment to curtail the powers of outgoing presidents to either make appointments or sign new contracts for the incoming government that has little or no knowledge about to inherit.
