He further described the late former Health Minister as hardworking and a mentor to many young women who served in various positions in government.

Mr Amissah-Arthur made the remarks when he led a government delegation to sign a book of condolence for the late former member of the erstwhile Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) who passed away last Sunday at the 37 Military Hospital.

She was 88. He was accompanied by a former Chief of Staff, Mr Henry Martey Newman; the Minister of Health, Mr Alex Segbefia; the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Kofi Portuphy, and the Finance Minister, Mr Seth Terkper.

Auntie Mary, as she was affectionately called, according to the Vice-President, had contributed her quota to national development, and stressed that “we need to celebrate her achievements and give her a memorable send-off”.

Portfolio

Dr Grant was appointed in 1989 among the last batch of PNDC members until the country returned to constitutional rule in 1993. She was in charge of general affairs.

While with the PNDC, she held many positions, including Deputy Minister of Health, and later became the Minister of Education and Culture and a Member of the Council of State.

In 2012, she was honoured at the Ghana Women Awards, the premier awards ceremony aimed at celebrating the success of women of excellence in various facets of the society.
