Akufo-Addo Was Impeccable With Costume; Anniversary Cloth Optional – Ghana@60 Committee

The Ghana @60 Planning Committee has put up a strong defense for the President for failing to represent the nation in the official [email protected] Anniversary cloth Monday, March 6, 2017 at Ghana’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Head of Media Sub-committee, Jefferson Sackey insists the Anniversary cloth was not a representation of the day, however the President was impeccable with costume as he equally wore an attire that represented the Ghanaian culture and tradition.

“The Anniversary cloth was something that we commissioned the Akosombo Textile Industry to produce. However, the cloth was optional; if you had money and you wanted to get it fine, but it wasn’t compulsory. What would have been very difficult for me to come and defend would be the President wearing Suit on the day, but the fact that we had the President wearing something traditional, honestly I think I’m very proud of it,” Sackey argued on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM.

The President, Vice President, as well as government functionaries have been flaked for ignoring the Anniversary cloth on the 6th of March during the 60th Anniversary Celebrations.

The cameras captured only two former Presidents from the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress(Fmr. President J. J Rawlings and Fmr President Mahama) and the 2016 Presidential Candidate of the CPP, Ivor Greenstreet as the only people from among the gathering who wore the [email protected] cloth.

Critics say, the President and his Ministers had no justification for ignoring the 60th Anniversary cloth which they’d sanctioned themselves for the members of the public to patronize during the climax of the celebration yesterday.

But Mr. Sackey contended that it was crucial for critics to highlight the option available for the day, hence the President and his Vice president didn’t fall afoul of Ghana’s tradition wearing a Northern smock that “equally represent us as a nation”

“We should ask ourselves what was the option? What were they wearing? Does it represent us as a nation? Is it traditional as a nation? Infact let’s remind ourselves back in 1957 when Ghana gained Independence and Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was declaring Independence for our country together with all the leaders that were with him, they were all wearing our traditional smock. Fast forward 60 years on, on the Independence Anniversary we’ve had a President who is wearing the traditional smock of the Northern region, which at the same time represented what we stood for as a nation. That is what our Founding fathers of our nation were wearing on the day of the declaration of our Independence.”
