Akufo-Addo Warns Actors of Impunity

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reassured Ghanaians that he will not oversee a regime where people act with impunity and blatantly disregard the law.

Reacting to recent developments in the Ashanti Region regarding the activities of the Delta Force, a vigilante group, he said: “In as much as the law enforcement agencies and the judiciary have moved in to apply the laws of our land, let me reiterate that it would not be under my watch that people act with impunity.”

“Neither would it be under my watch that the laws of our land would not be respected. That will not happen,” he stressed.

The President who said this in his Easter message to Ghanaians reiterated that “crime has no political colour under my government”.

Ambitious programme

He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and himself had put the most ambitious programme of social and economic transformation of any government in the history of the Fourth Republic if not in the entire history of the country, before the Ghanaian people.

That programme, he said, was hinged on restructuring the institutions of government, modernising agriculture to enhance its productivity, a clear industrial policy, rationalising the financial sector to support growth in agriculture, manufacturing and industry.

It was for that reason, he said, “that I regret very much, the unfortunate incidents that happened in Kumasi recently”.

“We are a nation governed by the rule of law and the law would work without fear or favour,” he assured.

He, therefore, urged all Christians to reflect on the important sacrifice Jesus Christ made for all on the cross of Calvary over 2000 years ago.

Victory over evil and despondency

He said Jesus’ death and resurrection from the grave were the triumphant victory for every Christian, adding that it was victory for life over death, good over evil and hope over despondency.

Buttressing his statement with the bible, he said: “ Chronicles 7:14 says if my people who are called by my name would humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn away from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and I will forgive their sins and will heal their land.”

In that vein, he called on all to renew and strengthen their faith in God and emulate Christ’s example of sacrifice for the greater good.

A Ghana beyond aid

“Let us continue to work for dignified, self-reliant and prosperous Ghana. A Ghana beyond aid, a Ghana mobilising its own material and human resources to build a strong economy capable of generating prosperity for the mass of its people,” he added.

His vision, he explained, was for a Ghana that was no longer dependent on handouts and charity.

He said he was aware that Ghanaians were dissatisfied with their living standards and the direction in which the country was heading that was why they voted emphatically for change and that was why he was elected as President.

“In this season of hope, let me reassure everyone that with God’s guidance we will transform our nation under the rule of law and use all the blessings that the Almighty has bestowed on us to bring wealth to all our people if we work,” he said.
