The disaster on Sunday claimed 18 lives with several others receiving treatment for various degrees of injury.

Before meeting the Ghanaians, who came from Geneva, Zurich, Lausanne and Bern, President Akufo-Addo called for the tribute to the victims.

“I don’t want to introduce a sad note into our proceedings,” he conceded.

“Even though today is International Day of Happiness, something happened in Ghana which is a very sad occurrence for all of us and that is this freak accident which took place in Kintampo.”

The president had tweeted earlier on Monday to express his condolence.

I have learnt with great sadness, the unfortunate incident that occurred at Kintampo Waterfalls yesterday. (1/2)

My deepest condolences to the families of all those affected by this unfortunate and tragic incident. (2/2)

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Catherine Afeku accompanied Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the day to visit victims on admission at the Kintampo Government Hospital.

They also called on families of those who died.

President Akufo-Addo expressed hope of getting a favourable word from his deputy.

“Vice President is on his way there. I hope he speaks to me this evening to see what he has found,” he said.

“But it is a freak accident…and before I go on, I would like you to join me in standing up to observe a minute’s silence in memory of [the departed].”

After the gesture, he said: “May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest and abide in the bosom of the Almighty till the last day of the resurrection and we shall all meet again. Amen!”
