The decision has been necessitated by what the President described as an abuse of the policy by previous governments.

“That policy will no longer work. No official is going to have the opportunity to buy any official car…Nobody is going to have that capacity anymore,” President Akufo-Addo said at the end of a three day retreat for all his ministers and cabinet at the Peduase Lodge in the Eastern Region.

He said ending the policy would put an end to the phenomenon of claims of missing and stolen state vehicles during transition periods.

President Akufo-Addo also announced a ban on the purchase of new vehicles by members of his government, noting that the country is in hard economic times for which reason his government has to adjust to the situatio.

“As you know, I’ve put a ban, for the time being, on the purchase of any new vehicles for members of this government,” he said, adding “No matter how dilapidated are the vehicles there are in our fleet, we are going to have to make do with them. These are difficult time for the Ghanaian people. And we should be seen to acting and respecting that”.

The three-day retreat was to afford Akufo-Addo government which assumed the governance of the country on January 7, the opportunity to review the performance of his government and to plan towards the realization of its agenda.

The president said it afforded them the opportunity to strengthen the bond of cooperation between his ministers, indicating “government, if it is to succeed, has to be team work. It cannot be one person or group of individuals acting in their own little corner.

It has to be a group of people coming together with common programme, common ideas and working to realise those ideas in the spirit of team work and of cooperation,” he added.

The retreat, he said would be a normal and regular feature of his government saying “collectively we are committed to deliver. We want the Ghaianaian people to know that all these things we said we were going to do, which we have begun to do, we are determine to do.”
