Airtel Africa, a leading telecommunications company with operations in 15 countries across Africa, has refuted speculative media reports that claimed it is exiting Africa.
The media reports suggested that Bharti Airtel, owners of Airtel Ghana, is in talks with rival company, Millicom International Cellular, operators of tiGO in Ghana, for a possible merger in Ghana.
The report indicates although the full amount involved in the deal is not yet known, the move comes as India’s number one telecom operator which is involved in what has been described as a brutal tariff war in its home market, tries to find ways to improve operations in Africa where it has yet to make a profit since entering the continent way back in 2010.
But Airtel has reaffirmed that it remains committed to Africa and will continue to invest in its operations to grow sustainably in Africa.
Head of Corporate Communications of Airtel Ghana, Richard Ahiagble has described the report as a total fabrication that should be disregarded.
“There’s something fundamentally wrong here, what you heard on Joy FM is a complete fabrication of their own imaginations. We haven’t issued any statements that Airtel is merging with any other company. All that you are hearing are mere speculations”, he denied.
