Afoko, NPP Unity Advocates Are ‘hypocrites’

Calls for a truce between the suspended National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr Paul Afoko, and the NPP are “hypocritical”, Nana Yaw Osei, spokesperson for Mr Afoko, has said.

Since the Accra Human Rights Court dismissed the lawsuit filed by Mr Afoko challenging his suspension, there have been calls on him to reunite with the party and abandon his plans of filing an appeal.

For instance, Bugri Naabu, the Northern regional chairman of the NPP, had said: “We (NPP) believe that Paul Afoko will come back. He is an NPP [member], no doubt. He is our brother, a northerner, and we want him. We will welcome him and so he should come back.”

Similarly, Mr Godfred Dame, who was the lead counsel for the NPP in the Afoko vs NPP case, said the suspended National Chairman cannot be left to his own fate, hence the need for the Dankwa-Busia-Dombo tradition to extend an olive branch to him.

“As a party, we should all unite now in one accord together with Mr Afoko. He should come on board and contribute to the campaign and make sure the NPP decisively defeats the NDC in the December 2016 general elections,” he said.

Adding to such calls was founding member Akenten Appiah- Menka, who told Prince Minkah, host of the Executive Breakfast Show on Tuesday that unity between Mr Afoko and the party was necessary ahead of the December polls since “politics is about numbers”.

But speaking in an interview with Prince Minkah on Wednesday, 17 August, Mr Yaw Osei said such calls were “hypocritical”.

“Tell them I say they are hypocrites. This matter did not drop from the skies, it has antecedents. They lied about the man and used that as a basis to get him off the position,” he fumed.
