The office of suspended New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Chairman, Paul Afoko, has dismissed calls for him to rescind his decision to appeal a Human Rights Court’s ruling that upheld his suspension.

His spokesperson, Nana Yaw Osei, dismissed suggestions that Mr. Afoko is only working against an NPP victory in the December polls.

A Human Rights Court in Accra on Monday dismissed a suit filed by Paul Afoko challenging his suspension.

But lawyers of the suspended Chairman have indicated they might appeal the judgement.

A statement signed by Paul Afoko’s Spokesperson Nana Yaw Osei, early on, said “lawyers for Mr. Afoko will carefully study the judgment and launch an appeal against the decision at the appropriate time.”

Some stakeholders within the party have since called on Paul Afoko to rescind his decision and work closely with the party to ensure victory in the December polls.

But speaking to Citi News, Nana Yaw Osei insisted Afoko will soon file his appeal.

Nana Yaw Osei believes Afoko’s decision to appeal the ruling does not necessarily mean he is fighting the party.

“All we are hearing is that, he should abandon the appeal and join forces with the NPP to work for victory. How can that happen? As if to say that he has been working against the NPP or working against the victory of the NPP.”

Afoko’s intent to appeal worrying

In a related development, lawyer for the NPP, Godfred Dame has expressed concerns over Paul Afoko’s decision to appeal, describing it as worrying.

Mr. Dame said although he does not have any qualms about Afoko’s decision to appeal, he believes it is unnecessary.

“I do not have any qualms or whatsoever about the fight not being over. As far as I am concerned, the suspension of Mr. Afoko has been declared lawful by the High Court. Now a greater burden is on him to convince the court of appeal about the irregularities of the decision taken today. This indication by Mr. Afoko is very worrying. It is very worrying…”

He wondered why Mr, Afoko will “act contrary to the spirit of unity peace and reconciliation shown by the party by going a further up to the appeal process.”
