ActionAid Ghana has asked government to initiate policies that support the equal allocation of domestic roles and promote equal access to markets for rural women farmers and entrepreneurs.
Madam Esther Boateng, Northern Region Manager of ActionAid, who made the call, said the implementation of the gender sensitive policies would reduce gender disparities and enable women to have time to engage in income-generating activities.
Madam Boateng made the call when delivering a speech to mark this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) in Tamale.
ActionAid Ghana held a march with women across some principal streets in Tamale and gathered at the palace of Naa Dakpema Alhaji Mohammed Alhassan Dawuni, a Tamale Chief to celebrate the IWM.
The march was to raise awareness on the discrimination and inequality that women faced in the country.
Madam Boateng said such policies would not only promote women’s economic empowerment but also contribute to the development of the country’s economy as well as reduce poverty.
Representatives from women groups, who took part in the march, also appealed to Naa Dakpema to advocate the need for men to involve their wives in decision making, and to also encourage girl child education.
Naa Dakpema Alhaji Alhassan Dawuni pledged his continued support for efforts to promote equal opportunities for women.
