4 Talking Points As GPL Builds Up Steam; Phobians the Draw Kings, Same Old Olympics

The early signs for the Ghana Premier League are promising and on Wednesday, the league served even more drama, plenty goals and talking points. Here are the four main talking points from the day’s action.

Kotoko and Aduana set for another battle

Aduana Stars have become regulars at battling for the league title since their shock triumph in 2010 and despite losing the one man goal machine that was Yahaya Mohammed, it seems obvious that they would have a lot to say in this year’s race.

Their 4-0 demolition of Bolga All Stars was emphatic and they would have been particularly pleased with the fact that the goals were spread among four players (Mumuni Zakaria, Nathaniel Asamoah, Noah Martey and Tanko Ibrahim).

The performance leaves them with a 100% record in the league so far; nine points from three games, six goals scored and none conceded.

The only side that has managed to keep up to them is Asante Kotoko and even they are two points behind.

The Porcupine Warriors have left it late in their two home games and needed penalties on both occasions to win but they have seven points and look like sticking around for long after Abeiku Ainooson’s effort gave them all three points in Kumasi against Bechem United.

Same old Olympics, different day

At half time, Accra Great Olympics were flying and the famous accolades was dominating social media. But after the break, Olympics resorted to type, allowing new boys Elmina Sharks to claw back the two goal deficit and earn a point at against the Agosu boys.

If there is one thing we have learned about Great Olympics, it is that they would blow hot and cold always. But even though would hope Abel Manoney does not stick to type after his brace for them against Sharks. They desperately need a goal scoring striker for what would be a long season.

Last season, Hearts of Oak had to endure a lot of taunts about how they could only draw games. This season, it has been pretty much the same story. When Hearts took an early lead in Cape Coast, the hope of many Phobians would have been that they would hold on.

Instead they were pegged back. If Scotsman Frank Nuttal was in any doubt about what he needs to do urgently with the Phobians, then he knows now; they need to be shutting out games or risk getting left behind by the leading pack.

Home advantage no guarantee for wins again

There was a time when a home game often meant wins. These days, it is no longer the case. True, many of the home sides won and some by big margins but increasingly, the games in the Ghana Premier League are getting tighter than ever.

Olympics lost a two goal advantage at home, Tema Youth could not shut out theirs and Kotoko laboured before making it count.  In Tarkwa, Inter Allies came back from a goal down to draw with Medeama. There were no away wins but four of the seven games ended in draws.

Maybe the theory that the home team always wins in the Ghana Premier League is not cast in stone.
