A 28-year old nurse, Emelia Buadi, who was promised a job as a nurse in Kuwait with a lucrative salary ended up being sold out as a housemaid upon her arrival in the gulf country. The nurse arrived in Kuwait in September this year, and went to the office of the Agent of Ibadams Ghana Travel and Tours Limited, a travel agency that facilitated her trip, but her passport and other travelling documents were seized and she was sold out as a housemaid.
Madam Buadi was also made to undergo medical check-up and the result revealed that she was one month pregnant but her agent advised her to terminate the pregnancy, which she refused.
She therefore called the Agent in Ghana, Ibrahim Adams, who facilitated her travel to Kuwait to assist her return home but he refused.
Madam Buadi informed her husband in Ghana who subsequently lodged a complaint with the police and Adams, who happened to be the Managing Director of the travel agency, was arrested on November 3, this month.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr. Richard Boatey, narrated the case to the chagrin of the presiding judge, her ladyship Mrs. Rita Duku, at the Takoradi Circuit Court.
The prosecutor told the court that the accused person, Ibrahim Adams, informed Madam Buadi, the complainant that his agent in Kuwait needed some nurses to work with, and therefore she should pay GH¢2,800 for processing of her traveling documents, which she obliged.
However, when she arrived in the gulf country of Kuwait, she was sold as a housemaid and suffered maltreatment and abuse.
The Agent also refused to assist her to return home until her husband bought a plane ticket at a cost of GH¢1,850 and sent it to her in Kuwait to enable her to return home in October this year.
The accused was charged with human trafficking and exploitation but pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of GH¢20,000 with two sureties to be justified.
