Thousands of job seekers on Saturday turned up at designated exam centers in Accra to write an aptitude test that they hope will advance them closer to earning employment with the national tax collection and administration body,  the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The candidates are writing the test in designated exam centers across the Accra and Tema Metropolises. The centers include the main campus of the University of Ghana, Legon, St Peters Senior High School, some branches of Ideal College, Legon PRESEC and Armed Forces Senior High Technical School.

Revenue Authority (GRA). Graphic Online checks with GRA officials at one of the exam centers showed that some 15,000 candidates are participating in the test, which has been divided into two sessions morning (9am) and afternoon (2pm).

At Legon PRESEC, where three classroom blocks were allocated to the test alone, index numbers given ended at 8,193.

All the candidates called for the October 29 test are the ‘lucky few,’ who sailed through the first stage of the authority’s recruiting process submission of application letters and other relevant documents which took place earlier in the year.

After today’s exercise,  those who will be able to sail through the aptitude test are expected to be invited for interviews before suitable candidates are picked for the jobs.

The swell in the numbers at the various centers underscored the mounting unemployment situation in the country, which has been exacerbated by the net freeze on recruitment into the public sector.

It is not clear how many GRA intends to employ but it is obvious the authority will not be able to absorb half of those invited for the exam.
