It has been revealed that government will provide 1 million free digital boxes to about 4.8 million households with television sets in the country. Deputy Communications Minister Ato Sarpong who made this known, indicated that government’s digi boxes will be distributed in under-resourced communities. This is to assist under-served households who cannot afford such to catch up with the nationwide digital migration project.

Mr. Atpo Sarpong said this while addressing chiefs and people of Brewuniase in the Nkwanta South District, as part of a campaign tour by the Chief of staff, Julius Debrah, in the Volta region.

In its bid to achieve the project, government has already approved 82 million dollars for infrastructure, and 25 million dollars for the procurement of the digital boxes. This was also revealed by the Deputy Communications Minister during the visit.

Ato Sarpong also said that the Ministry of Communication, in collaboration with telecoms like; MTN, GIFEC and Ericsson, will embark on a telecommunications network extension, in the latter part of next year. He also said the stakeholders have identified 125 districts in the country which are to benefit from the exercise.

The Deputy Communications Minister said this in response to a concern raised by the Omanhene of Ntrubo Traditional Area, over challenges they face accessing telecommunication services.

The NDC government has continued to make efforts to show the people it has their interest at heart. Many accusing fingers have been pointed at the government and its leadership, especially by oppositions. The most prominent of the accusations is that the government is mismanaging the country’s economy, thereby causing the people to suffer extreme hardship.

But the Mahama-led administration has continued to make attempts to let the public see clearly its plans for the nation, especially as the general elections draw closer by the day.
