It’s been amazing five weeks of scintillating football, the goals, the assists, the tackles, flicks and goal bound misses of the league have contributed to the beauty of the 2016/2017 University of Ghana Football League (UGFL). The teams in the four groups prepare to enter the final week of matches as they are anxious to qualify for the Top four competition. Below is how each group is shaping up.

Group A: Akuafo vs Sey to determine winner of the group

One of the minnows in this year’s league Elizabeth Sey Hall (2nd in the group) have proven everybody wrong by giving defending Champions Akuafo in first position a stern fight for the top position. Both teams will square off in the last match in what promises to be the duel in Group A. Elizabeth Sey needs the maximum 3 points and a goal margin of 5 to qualify. The other fixture between City Campus and Distance Education will not have any bearing on who qualifies.

Group B: Legon hall in a comfortable lead

Runners up of last year league Legon hall is cruising comfortably to the Top four having picked 12 points in their opening four fixtures with a goal difference of 23. Any mishap to derail their qualification will be their own complacency though they have their last games to play against bottom place Bani with zero point and second placed African Union with 9 points.

Group C: Vikings hoping for a Limann slip up

Two time champions Mensah Sarbah hall (Vikings) are determined to win against Jean Nelson hall and hope a slip up for Hilla Limann against United Nations hall will give them the qualification even before they face Limann in their last group fixture. The Vikings failed to qualify for the last edition of the Top Four with Limann wanting to have a second bite of the Top Four cherry.

Group D: Valco and J. T.N Yankah to determine fate of who qualifies.

Commonwealth Hall (Vandals) and A.A. Kwapong are in a fierce battle to qualify. Once again the mathematics has already started with both teams locked on the same points and goal difference. A.A. Kwapong faces bottom team Valco who have nothing to play for except for pride while Commonwealth faces a decent opposition in J.T.N Yankah hall who are 3rd in the group. Should both teams win, the determining factor will be who has been more prolific upfront.

About League

The soccer league involves the male soccer teams of the various Halls of residence. With a current number of 16 participating halls, they are divided into four groups. The best team in each group, after matches played across both semesters will then play The Special Top Four to determine the league winners.
