He is expected to drive operations of the new sporting regulatory body until it holds a substantive congress.

The Ghana Armwrestling Federation was formed early this year by Osei Asibey, himself an Executive Committee Member of both the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) and the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG).

The Federation has since been inaugurated by the National Sports Authority (NSC) and issued with a licence as a legally-recognised federation.

The federation has also been granted membership of the Morocco-based Africa Armwrestling Federation (AFA) and the World Armwrestling Federation (WAF).

The Deputy Director-General of the authority in charge of Technical, Saka Acquaye, speaking at the inaugural ceremony said the laws establishing the federations enjoin them to have regional and district associations, a strategy to promote the interests, rights and social cohesion of Ghanaians.

He, therefore, threatened to revoke licences of federations that concentrate all their activities in Accra and some few cities.

Armwrestling involves two participants who place one arm each on a surface with their elbows bent and touching the surface, and they grip each other’s hand. The goal is to pin the other’s arm onto the surface, with the winner’s arm over the loser’s arm. It is a traditional recreation in most African communities but interest in it as a professional sport started early this year when the Ghana Armwrestling Federation was formed to spearhead the promotion of the game.

Two championships have since been held in Accra and Kumasi.

The inauguration of the two brings to 40 the number of sporting federations legally known to the National Sports Authority.
