Gyamfi Wins Kotoko Player of the Month of February

Asante Kotoko midfielder Emmanuel Gyamfi has been in an exceptional form in recent weeks, helping Zdravko Lugarusic’s side go on an impressive run of four games without a defeat in the Ghana Premier League.

The 23-year-old kicked off February on the periphery of the Porcupine Warriors’ 2-1 victory over Liberty Professionals – the first game of the campaign- winning a penalty in that game when they were down by a lone goal.

He later won the best player against Berekum Chelsea in a goalless draw at the Golden City Park and also won a penalty against Bechem United as Kotoko won 1-0 before providing another assist when Yakubu Mohammed scored the only goal against Ashanti Gold to end their five-year winless streak in Obuasi.

Gyamfi shrugged off competitions from Ashittey Ollenu and striker Yakubu, who scored three goals in four games. The midfielder believes the achievement is beginning of better things to come in the season.

“Thanks to my teammates and the supporters for their role in the club’s achievement in February. I am also happy to win this award because we are making giant strides in the campaign,” Gyamfi told Goal.

“I believe this performance will motivate me and my colleagues to achieve a lot of things in the season. I want to help Kotoko to win the league title because I have not even lifted the title before.

“The coach gave me a new role when he took over but many supporters criticised him. I think I am coping well and can be a success if only I work outside my comfort zone. I just have to do my best for the team and be a team player rather than being a selfish guy. We can win the title and make the supporters proud,” he added.

Kotoko will host Elmina Sharks on Sunday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadiums as they hope to topple leaders Aduana Stars, who will be facing third-place Hearts of Oak in Accra.
