GFA Not In Haste To Appoint Grant’s Successor

Ghana Football Association technical director Francis Oti Akenteng says his outfit will not rush to name a new coach for the Black Stars.

The four-time African champions are on the search for a fresh hand, with current coach Avram Grant set to leave at the end of February.

Following a disappointing campaign at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, Grant and the FA have mutually agreed to part ways.

“Before we will name a coach, we have to do an evaluation of Avram Grant’s work and that will also include his work at the tournament,” Akenteng told Joy Sports.

“After the evaluation, then we will know what to do next. We will then look at the kind of coach to go in for, is it a development coach?

“We have to take our time in doing this because we need somebody who will be very suitable for the work.”

Grant was named Ghana coach in December 2014, but after leading the side to the final of the Afcon two months later, the former Chelsea manager struggled to make any significant impact in subsequent campaigns.

The fourth finish at the recent Afcon was his final straw.

Ghana return to action in June when they host Ethiopia in the 2019 Afcon qualifiers, but there have been reports of a possible international friendly with Nigeria in March.

Uganda coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic and Morocco’s Herve Renard have been linked to the Ghana job.

According to French news portal L’Equipe, the GFA are in advanced talks with former Girondins de Bordeaux coach Willy Sagnol.
