Former Ghana Coach Milovan Rajevac Discloses How Asamoah Gyan Broke His Heart

Former Black Stars coach Milovan Rajevac has revealed how Asamoah Gyan shattered his heart after he missed a late penalty against Uruguay in the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA Wolrd Cup in South Africa.

The former Rennes striker stepped forward to take a penalty after Luiz Suarez had handled the ball in the 90th minute of the game.

But Gyan fluffed his line as he hit the ball to the goal post as Uruguay went on to eliminate the Black Stars 4-2 on penalties to shatter the dreams of Ghanaians.

Ghana would have become the first African country to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup had Gyan netted from 12-yards.

And reflecting on the incident after eight years, Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac, who was in the dugout for the Black Stars revealed how the unfortunate miss broke his heart and says he’ll never forget that day.

“Believe me, this end of the match and this elimination, I cannot get them out of my head, they are matches like we see very few of them, those who make you go down in history,” Rajevac told

“Who knows, maybe if we had converted this penalty, we might have gone to the end, I’m sure I’ll never forget that moment, luck fled that day and she smiled to Luis Suarez, which has even boosted his career.”
