Former Ghana Captain Adwoa Bayor Backs Mercy Tagoe For Black Queens Job

Former Black Queens captain Adwoa Bayor has thrown her weight behind Mercy Tagoe to be named a substantive coach of the female senior national team.

Tagoe defied the odds as she led the Black Queens team to clinch the maiden edition of the WAFU Women’s Cup of Nations tournament after beating host country Ivory Coast 1-0 in the final on Saturday.

According to Bayor, who captained the Black Queens to the 2007 FIFA World Cup in China, has backed the former Amidaus Professionals deputy coach for the top job role following her success in the competition.

“I think Mercy Tagoe has done enough to be given the black Queens job,” Bayor told Oyerepa FM.

“It’s time we allow the women to show their worth, a female for a female team and a male for a male team which is practiced everywhere or better still get the technical directors of the FA to guide her but I will be very surprised if the head coach post is given to a male.”

“Let’s not forget she has played, has been a referee and now a coach who has written history as the first female to win trophy for Ghana.”

The 44-year-old is the first ever Ghanaian female coach to lead the Black Queens to glory.

Tagoe had previously made history as the first Ghanaian female referee to officiate at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2007.

She was also part of the history making Black Queens squad that qualified for their first ever FIFA World Cup in 1999.
