Change In Gov’t Won’t Affect Black Stars

Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi has assured that the Black Stars ambition of winning the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon would not be affected by the recent change in government.

Incumbent president John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress lost to main opposition leader Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party on December 7.

The new administration is expected to announce a new cabinet in January and that will include a new youth and sports minister to replace Nii Lante Vanderpuye.

However, Nyantakyi, who has served under more than eight ministers since becoming the GFA president in 2005 says everything will be alright.

“I’m not sure the changes in government would have any effect on us at the [Afcon] tournament,” Nyantakyi said.

“It happened in 2009, but we went on to win gold at the Fifa U20 World Cup in Egypt,” he added.

Avram Grant’s men, who have been paired with Egypt, Uganda and Mali in Group D, are expected to camp in Equatorial Guinea before the tournament kicks off.

Ghana lost the final of the previous edition to Cote d’Ivoire on penalties and would be chasing their first title since 1982.
