Ghana’s senior female football team, the Black Queens Thursday marched on the streets of Accra to Parliament and the Sports Ministry over match and camp bonuses owed the team.
According to the ladies who only returned from a bronze medal feat at the 2016 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Cameroon, each player is owed as much as $25,000 dating back to 2015 when they won gold at the All Africa Games.
Speaking to GHOne News, team captain Elizabeth Addo as well as striker Samira Suleman bemoaned the treatment meted out to them over time.
“This has been the same old story. We are always told to wait and get tossed around,” Addo stated.
Samira also said the turn of events “has demoralized us. When I listen to my colleagues, they’re always saying the way women’s football is going in Ghana now, they don’t think they are going to play again.”
She added that there’s no appreciation of the efforts they put in making the country proud.
The Black Queens, Thursday morning, marched from the Ghana FA headquarters in Accra to the Parliament House to petition Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuije but were unable to meet him. The ladies subsequently moved to his office where they have been told would have audience of the Minister from 2pm.
