Some Security Officers May Not Vote In Special Voting Due To Error – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) in the Central Region says it has detected errors in the list of people who are to take part in the Special Voting in this year’s general elections in the region, noting it could disenfranchise the affected voters if not corrected.

Director of the Commission in the Region, Mrs Philomena Adusei, who revealed this Thursday said the list given as those to vote in the region, had names of people who are to vote in other regions in the Special Voting.

She was not sure what might have caused the errors on the list but said it could be because those affected, who are mostly from the security agencies, might not have indicated where they intend to vote.

“If you don’t find your name in the region where you are on the day of special voting, you can’t vote and you cannot also vote in the main election because your name will not be in the register,” Mrs Adusei indicated.

This was when she met with the Central Regional Coordinating Council in Cape Coast to brief the Council on their activities to help forge the way forward for the region.

She explained per the voter identity information on the list sent to the region, a lot of the voters are not in the region.

Mrs Adusei said some of the affected voters have been contacted by the Commission to rectify the situation but said they were unable to get in touch with the rest, hence called on the heads of the security agencies to liaise with the EC headquarters in Accra resolve the anomalies.

Meanwhile, she said the Commission is  80 per cent ready to conduct the elections, and expressed optimism that voting would be peaceful on December 7 when Ghanaians vote for a president and 275 members of parliament.

The Central region, she said, has a total of 2482 polling stations, noting they have already given to the security agencies, all the flashpoints.

Central Regional Minister, Mr Kweku Ricketts Hagan who took part in the meeting urged all to help ensure a peaceful general elections by desisting from violence.
