The National Democratic Congress chairman for the Central Region has indicated civilians will not tolerate the issue of missing names on the voters’ register on election day.
According to Mr Allotey Jacobs, unlike the personnel of the various security agencies whose names were excluded from the voters’ register in Thursday’s special voting, civilians may not entertain such issues should that occur on December 7.
“Next week like this, I don’t think the people will entertain this. These are security agencies and so they will be civil and not cause chaos, but civilians will not do that,” he warned.
He warned that such issues on December 7 could create chaos, especially so “when we have political parties involved.
Hundreds of police and military personnel as well as those from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Prisons Services could not cast their vote in Thursday’s special voting because their names were excluded from the list of voters.
Commenting on the issues on Onua FM’s Ghana Dadwene Thursday, Mr Allotey Jacobs said “let me appeal to the security personnel who could not vote in the elections to be calm. It is most unfortunate that such situation is happening”.
He added: “special voting is a prototype to next week’s general elections and if such thing should happen next week, it is recipe for chaos”.
Mr Jacobs has meanwhile advised EC to immediately address the issue, indicating “a week is enough to remedy the situation for next week for us to have a peaceful election… I will appeal to the EC to put their house in order”.
He said the EC should make sure those who could not vote today have the chance to exercise their constitutional mandate.
“It’s a complete error and I know the frustrations of those who could not vote. It is a human institution and we can never be perfect” but said despite the challenges, he would rate the EC 70 per cent for Thursday’s exercise.
