The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has given government about four weeks ultimatum to lift the ban on recruitment of lecturers for public universities.
The association has for some time been critical on government for ban.
Meanwhile, the association also called on tertiary institutions to scale down their intake of students this year so as to reduce the pressure on the request for lecturers.
In an interview with 3FM News, National Secretary of UTAG, Dr. Samuel Nkumbaan indicated the association will consider other options if government fails to adhere to their demands.
“This decision to send this reminder was taken at the national executive committee of UTAG. What we are seeking to do is to give government up to towards the end of the month and if we don’t have any feedback then the national executive committee will re-convene and determine what next we will do”.
The association has disclosed plans on meeting the government this week on the matter.
“We are calling on government to outrightly lift the ban on recruitment of lecturers to public sector universities…the councils are the one with the authority to determine as and when the need be for recruitment and so they are the ones who would be able to determine all of those and not for government to usurp the authority of the councils of the universities”.
