A highly confidential security source has confirmed to 3news.com that the explosives found near the official residence of Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister were homemade bombs.
One of the explosives was deposited at the entrance to the Deputy Minister Andy Osei Okrah’s house. The other was left close to his official government bungalow which is a few meters from a national security installation that is used as a data centre.
Some residents who claimed they saw two guys on a motorbike dropping the explosives raised an alarm, which attracted the attention of the security services.
The national anti-bomb team went to the scene Tuesday morning to defuse the objects. The initial comment by the security team was that they were not bombs but “powerful explosives”.
But 3news.com has gathered from its sources at National Security that the items picked from the scene were two gas cylinders – 7.5kg – with flammable liquid and a timer.
TV3’s Northern Sector Bureau Chief, Kofi Adu Domfeh also gathered that there were cables and tubes beside the cylinders.
“The source describes it as homemade bomba which could explode if they had been connected,” Adu Domfeh recounted.
Meanwhile, some residents are worried that such explosive items could be dropped off near a National Security building but were not detected by the security agency.
In the meantime, the family of the Deputy Minister have been evacuated from the building.
