Student Leaders Must Accept Criticism

January 27, 2017

It is said that critiques shape the ideas of leaders and keeps them on their toes in response to their roles and responsibility as leaders. Also, criticism offers you an opportunity to assess your weakness and better appreciate how others perceive you. It is so disturbing, when most student leaders hate to be criticized and condemned for their bad decisions.

The situation is no different in Koforidua Technical University, when some SRC executives can’t even tolerate their critics. Some of these executives have resorted to insults and personal attacks on students who criticize and condemn their bad decisions.

These leaders have tagged students who constantly criticize them as “noise makers and empty barrels”. Student leaders should not make statements based on emotions, since emotions have no intellect. I will be very excited if some of them continue on this trajectory but will be sad if they discontinue their attacks and insults on some of us. We want student leaders who will tolerate criticism.

We are looking for student leaders who will unite KTU and not leaders who will divide us just because we never supported them in their campaign. What we need is an understanding leadership who will seek the well-being of all students. The leadership of the SRC should remember that they are the only legitimate mouthpiece of the entire student body.

Students leaders, particularly SRC executives, year after year disappoint most students and add up to the student problems. Some of these leaders amaze me when fortunes locate them to win such positions they behave like drug addicts and alcoholics ignoring students’ basic problems. I ask, must we remain silent when we cannot have a reliable internet access on campus, when there is no proper lighting system on campus?

The annual dues we contribute accumulates into thousands of Cedis but still they can’t solve basic problems we face on campus. How do we describe these leaders when students pay for services but do not get value for money?

The incompetence of such leaders should be something we should ponder over and start apportioning part of the blame on us because we voted them into power. In conclusion, must we sit and fold our arms when these same leaders can’t even fight and protect the interest of the students who entrusted them with their mandate….?
