A magistrate court in Wassa Akropong in the Wassa Amenfi East District of the Western Region has sentenced two men to 24 months each in prison for possessing human bones.
The two, Kwaku Donkor 32 and Abraham Baidoo 45 were arrested on Thursday by the Western Regional police when they attempted to sell the bones to another person.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Western Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Olivia Adiku said the two convicts contacted a resident of Wassa Akropong, whose identity was being kept a secret, to sell the human parts to him.
She said the anonymous person than contact the police and informed them of his encounter with the convicts.
“The police then worked with this man to pretend he wants to buy the human parts so when they brought the bones, the police, who were in hiding moved in to arrest the them,” she said.
Asked how the police secured such a quick conviction, Mrs Adiku said Donkor and Baidoo plead guilty when they were arraigned before the court.
She said another 38 years old man, Kwame Nsowa had been arrested in connection of the crime upon further investigations and that he was yet to be arraigned before the court.
“Police also retrieved a locally manufactured pistol and three catridges from Kwaku Donkor,” she added.
The PRO said the police was preparing a separate prosecution for the possession of arms and that the docket on the case would be sent to the Attorney General’s office for advice.
She called on members of the general public to assist the police to deliver on its mandate by providing information to the police.
She said the maintenance of security was a shared responsibility and that all Ghanaians must join hands with the police to fight crime.
