This year World Malaria Day which is on the theme “End Malaria for Good” witnessed the launching of the Ghana Malaria Foundation by Her Excellency, Mrs. Rebecca Akuffo Addo, the First Lady of the Republic of Ghana.

The First lady who was also the Guest Speaker for the programme in a statement indicated that the purpose for the Ghana Malaria Foundation was to mobilize funds internally for the elimination of the malaria disease by 2030.

She introduced a 14-member board to be chaired by Mr. Prince Kofi Amoabeng, a renowned business man to help mobilize funds to help eliminate the disease and commended them for investing their time, energy and resources to chart a noble course by ending malaria for good.

Speaking to this paper on the sideline during an exhibition exercise at the Accra International Conference Centre, to showcase projects and products of companies and donor funded agencies in malaria control in Ghana, the Deputy Programme Head of the Vector Control Unit of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr. Abel Djangmah said that malaria control interventions needs full integration to be able to achieve the desired target.

He pointed out that looking at the effect of malaria on worker’s productivity at the work place, the task involved and the huge investment required to be able to totally eradicate malaria, private sector participation is needed in order to drive all malaria control interventions in the country.

He said whilst it is important for people to sleep under insecticides treated mosquito bed nets especially pregnant women, the aged and children under 5, people must not lose sight on the environment which is the breeding ground of the anopheles’ mosquito.

Mr. Abel explained that conventionally, the anopheles’ mosquitoes which causes malaria normally breed in clean, clear waters in our homes, however, climate change has caused a paradigm shift in the breeding grounds of most vectors hence the need to refocus our attention on the breeding grounds of the anopheles’ mosquitos as well as refocusing our control strategy.

He emphasized that the ongoing Nationwide Mosquito Control Programme of Zoomlion will continually expand its Larviciding, environmental control and residual barrier spraying scope to cover wider areas across the country in order to reduce the adult mosquito biting nuisance and diseases incidence in the country.

The World Malaria Day which is marked on the 25th April each year is used to chronicle the milestone of the malaria control efforts and lessons learned in the country.
