The Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta, has directed contractors working on the Tema Roundabout improvement project, to work at night to minimise road traffic and the inconveniences caused to motorists and others during the day.

Complaints

He explained that the directive had become necessary because of complaints the ministry had received from residents, pedestrians and motorists about the inconveniences caused to them by the serious traffic congestion that results from the expansion of the Tema Roundabout.

Mr Amoako-Atta gave the directive when he inspected a number of ongoing road works in the Tema Metropolis last Friday.

They included the Tema Roundabout improvement project, the road from the Industrial Area to T. T. Brothers, to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).

He was accompanied by his two deputies, Mr Kwabena Owusu Aduomi and Mr Anthony N-Yoh Puowele Karbo, the Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Meridian Port Services (MPS), Mr Mohamed Samara.

Motorway Roundabout project

The Tema Motorway Roundabout improvement project involves the construction of four by-passes to reduce the number of vehicles approaching the roundabout, construction of an additional third lane to widen the roundabout itself, upgrading of a section of the Akosombo Road into a dual carriageway and the rehabilitation of a section of the Harbour Road. Some roads are also undergoing asphaltic overlay.

Mr Amoako-Atta also urged the contractors, SinoHydro Corporation Limited, to take steps to reduce the inconveniences to the travelling public.

The minister asked the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) Commander of the police service in Tema, Mr Joseph Owusu Bempah, to assign officers to regulate the road traffic to reduce the inconveniences.
