The latest on the current agenda for discussion is that the Black Stars captain may resign from the national team after 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

According to veteran coach, JE Sarpong, he advised Gyan to draw the curtain down on his international career, but the Kayserispor striker refused, explaining that he wanted to lead Ghana to the next AFCON before retiring.

This then balls down to the fact that the 32-year-old is truly considering retiring from the Black Stars. This is contrary to reports that the captain is reluctant towards taking his leave from the team.

The Black Stars needed to defeat Congo in Kumasi to spark hopes of reaching the tournament in Russia, however, a 1-1 draw by Congo had ruined their chances.

Gyan had become the subject of criticism from a section of Ghanaians following Ghana’s poor showing in the game, with some suggesting the striker is no longer as efficient as he used to be.

However, Ghana secured a victory in the return leg of the match, restoring hope among the people.

Ghana stayed in the hunt to qualify for a fourth successive FIFA World Cup after a ruthless finishing gave the Black Stars an impressive 5-1 win over Congo in Brazzaville on Tuesday, September 5.

Captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan who had sustained an injury in the previous match was absent during the game which saw the team net five goals against Congo in Brazzaville.

Gyan’s Retirement then became an agenda for discussion following the team’s 5-1 victory without his tactful skills. The common notion was that if the team could make it in Brazzaville without reputable Captain Gyan, then he (Gyan) can as well take his rest.

Only God Can Retire Me From the Black Stars -Gyan

Gyan who has admitted that the Black Stars is going through a difficult time but maintains that the circumstances will not force him into premature retirement. The 32-year-old said this in an interview with Kumasi-based Angel FM.

The 31-year-old who is the longest serving player in Ghana’s national team has been with the team for the last fourteen years.

Following the Black Stars poor performance against Congo in the World Cup qualifier at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, many stakeholders advocates of the team have called for some of the old guards to be sidelined including Asamoah Gyan.

But the Captain of Ghana’s national says that no one can retire him from the team except God. Asamoah is Ghana’s all-time top scorer after scoring his 50th goal against Ethiopia two months ago.
